Certain earlier-generation Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detectors are no longer supported for NEW installation due to updated cybersecurity requirements.
What’s changing?
The security certificates used by these devices have expired. Because of this:
- Devices not online or registered as of January 12, 2026 can no longer be installed or authenticated
- Devices that were already online and in use as of January 12, 2026 will remain supported and continue to work; due to receiving the updated Security PKI certificate.
This change is related to cyber security standards and is not a product recall or defect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why can’t my device be installed or reconnected?
A: These legacy devices rely on PKI security certificates that have expired. Due to cybersecurity requirements and the way these products were originally manufactured, the certificates cannot be updated or migrated to newer authentication systems if it was not updated prior January 12, 2026.
Q: Will my device still work if it’s already connected?
A: If your device was connected and authenticated prior to January 12, 2026 and remained online, it will continue to function and be supported. However, if it was disconnected from the cloud for an extended period, it may not have received the new certificate prior to expiration. The new certificates were pushed via OTA for the majority of 2025.
Q: I just purchased this device — why doesn’t it work?
A: Some remaining inventory of these models may still be available through online marketplaces or retail channels. New, never-connected units can no longer be installed due to the expired security certificates. Please see the app instructions or contact customer care for replacement options.
Q: Is this a recall?
A: No. This is not a recall and does not relate to a safety defect. This is a security-driven end-of-installation decision.
Q: What should I do if my device won’t connect?
A: Please contact Technical Support. Eligible customers may receive an updated and next generation free replacement Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector.

Q: Are newer Resideo Water Leak and Freeze Detectors affected?
A: No. Newer models, such as the Resideo and First Alert L1 Series, use updated security authentication and are not impacted by this expiration.
Q: Will a new (never connected) device still work as a Water Leak Detector, without having been updated to the new PKI?
A: Yes, your device will function as a non-connected water leak detector, informing you of leaks with the built-in 100db audible alarm. You will not be able to receive in-app notifications, history, or app usage.
